A word fitly spoken is like APPLES OF GOLD in a setting of silver – Proverbs 25v11
In the Book of Proverbs wisdom is mentioned 55 times and the word wise 56 times and if there is a quality that we all need, it is to be wise. The purpose of the book is stated at the beginning “The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behaviour, doing what is right and just and fair” Proverbs 1v1-3.
Unfortunately some people make the mistake of thinking wisdom is being clever. Being clever does not take into account morality whereas wisdom is the foundation for insight and prudent behaviour which involves being fair, just and right. It is not something we are born with unlike clever people who happen to have the right genes and DNA. We have to obtain wisdom and James tells us in James chapter 1v5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you”. Wisdom is a gift from God and it is something we have to desire as Proverbs 2v6 tells us. “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding”.
It is important we understand what underpins wisdom and we find this in Proverbs chapter 9v10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” This isn’t the fear of terror, but the fear which means respect and reverence. It means acknowledging Jesus as Lord of our lives and submitting our will, heart and mind to His control. It means we have a desire to live as light in this dark world and seek to honour and glorify His name in all we do, say and think.
Next week we will look at some of the blessings of wisdom found in chapter 3v13 “Blessed are those who find wisdom.”
God Bless
